What We Do

Philanthropy Development

All our programs are aimed in different ways at philanthropy development in Russia. The Foundation is trying by means of its various activities to build trust to charitable institutions and organizations and to change philanthropy environment and to develop a culture of giving in our country. By supporting future leaders and human capital, by being open and transparent we are nurturing a generation of individuals who is involved  in philanthropic activities and can contribute considerably to changing social environment with the help of their knowledge and experience.

Our activities are also aimed to promote a common vision for strategic philanthropy, the strengthening of philanthropic collaboration, and the development of philanthropic infrastructure in Russia. The Foundation is the founding member of the Russian Donors Forum, a partnership of major Russian and international donor organizations carrying out their activities in the Russian Federation.

The Endowment Growth Strategy Program was launched in 2012 as a pilot project and since the Program’s outcomes have proved its viability and efficiency as well as a demand for it in the educational and cultural spheres, the Foundation decided to shift it into a regular ongoing regime. The new format was presented on March 4, 2015, at the meeting dedicated to trust management of endowments at the time of crisis and hosted by the Endowment Club of the Donors Forum– a non-for-profit partnership of granting organizations.

The Program’s first stage will be a competition for the development of a new educational course on building endowments for non-for-profits’ and NGOs’ staff members. This competition will help to select an organization which will form a basis for such educational course. The first admission to the program training for highly professional managers in the sphere of endowments development will take place in the summer 2015. Twenty five selected participants will be admitted to the course uniting theory classes and practical activities under the supervision of curators. With the financial support of the Foundation the participants will have an opportunity to implement their projects on building an endowment. After monitoring the submitted projects Vladimir Potanin will make encouraging contributions to the endowments of the most successful participants of the Program. The total amount of the contributions will equal about US $ 520 000. According to Vladimir Potanin, the idea of the Program is “to encourage a wider development of endowments in Russia as an efficient social technology. The Program’s participants will be able to show in practice that endowments today is an essential tool for sustainable financing”.

Among the successful examples of the Program’s pilot are the Friends of the State Museum of Peterhofforganization which implemented an effective fundraising project from the inception to a successful conclusion, and the sector for development of Saint Petersburg State University, where the endowment of the Department of Arts and Humanities built on major donations was able to involve mass fundraising.
